When Elementor released its MCP support, I kept putting off testing it. So I finally did it properly: I rebuilt my website with AI, without placing a single element by hand. The AI did the building. I did the deciding. Here's what that was actually like, what AI did brilliantly, and why my taste still made the difference.
Key takeaways
- You can rebuild a website with AI — it handles the building fast and consistently.
- AI is great at production, not at judgement. It doesn't know when something looks wrong.
- Every design decision that made the site better came from a human.
- For business owners: AI gets you a website. A designer gets you the right one.
Why I rebuilt my website with AI
Honestly? Elementor released its MCP support, and I kept postponing trying it. MCP lets an AI assistant work directly inside Elementor — the website builder my site runs on — creating pages and styles instead of just suggesting them. Rebuilding my own website felt like the most honest way to find out what it can really do.
It was also a chance to put the idea from my last article, whether building websites by hand is dead, to the test on real work: a new homepage, a clearer services section, dark mode and a better mobile experience.
How it worked
The process was simple. I described what I wanted in plain words, the AI built it directly in Elementor, and I reviewed the result on my laptop and phone — then told it what to change.
For the navigation menu, the AI used Sitefar, a tool I built for managing WordPress websites.
About Sitefar
Sitefar is a tool I designed and built to manage multiple WordPress websites from one place — updates, backups, menus and site reports — and it connects to AI assistants, too. I'll be sharing the full product design story as a case study in my portfolio.
What AI did really well
- Speed. Whole pages appeared in minutes. Ideas I'd normally put off for weeks were done the same day.
- Consistency. It set up one system of colours, fonts and buttons and stuck to it on every page.
- The boring parts. Dark mode, mobile layouts, accessibility — handled without complaint.
- Checking its own work. It tested every change and fixed most problems before I even saw them.
Where my taste made the difference
Everything the AI built worked. Not everything it built was good. These were the moments where a designer's eye mattered.
“The ugliest switch I've ever seen”
The first dark mode switch technically did its job. It also looked terrible, and I said so. It took a few rounds of honest feedback to get to something small and elegant that fits the rest of the site. AI won't tell you something is ugly — you have to.
Knowing what the mobile menu should be
The AI's first idea was to patch the standard menu with extra options. It worked, but it wasn't what a good mobile experience looks like. I asked for a properly designed menu instead — and that's a decision only someone with a picture of the end result can make.
Saying no to generic
Stock icons, a button that didn't match the others, a font that wasn't quite my brand. None of these break a website, but together they make it look like everyone else's. Catching them is the difference between a template and a brand.
What this means for designers
- Your value is shifting from making things to deciding what's right.
- Have a clear picture of the end result before you start.
- Give honest, specific feedback — AI responds well to it.
- Review everything on mobile, where most people will see it.
What this means for business owners
AI website design tools will get you a website faster and cheaper than ever. But a website that works isn't the same as a website that wins customers. The AI didn't know my audience, my brand or what “good” looks like — I did.
- Use AI to move fast on the parts that don't need judgement.
- Bring in a designer for strategy, brand and the final polish.
- Judge the result by how it feels to your customers, not by how quickly it was made.
Frequently asked questions
Can you rebuild a website with AI?
Yes. AI can now build pages, layouts and styles directly in tools like Elementor. You still need someone to decide what the site should say and to judge whether the result is good enough.
Can AI build a website in Elementor?
Yes. With Elementor MCP, an AI assistant can work directly inside Elementor and create pages and sections that you can keep editing in the visual editor.
Do you still need a web designer if AI builds the site?
In my experience, yes. AI handled the building well, but every design decision that made my site better came from a human eye.
Can I edit a website that AI built?
Yes. When AI builds inside your website builder, the result is made of the same building blocks you'd use yourself, so you can edit it like any other page.
What is Sitefar?
Sitefar is a tool I built to manage multiple WordPress websites from one place, including updates, backups and menus. It also connects to AI assistants.
The bottom line
Rebuilding my website with AI was faster than any redesign I've done. But the AI never decided what the site should look like or say. That part is still the job — and it's the part I enjoy most.
